Matthew Derby Interviewed at the Collagist
This guy wrote a collection of short stories called Superflat Times, one of four books I’ve ever given as a gift.
I found him on Facebook, and it turns out he works at Harmonix on the Rockband website. Now he’s my virtual friend and I see his posts to new work and interviews like the one in the link.
I think SuperFlat Times is genius, and I imagine life for geniuses as an effortless stream of events. They are deferred to but always gracious. The chefs in chic restaurants come to their tables to exchange compliments. They have young, ultra-competent, attractive assistants who appear whenever needed. After leaving a New York skyscraper, a genius makes a tiny, arcane hand gesture and then a limousine appears.
It’s weird to see revelations on novels that never went anywhere and bleak predictions for his future creative output. Weird and awesome.
